10 Business Days of Dell

January 22nd, 2007 by Ken

Imagine my surprise when I saw a banner AD stating Dell Days were back and I didn’t get an email about it! I checked with Raman and he did not either but after checking the link he noticed that it was 10 Business Days of Dell… A different department all together I guess. I managed to catch this on day 1 so onward to Dell!

OpenDNS. DNS service with a twist

November 7th, 2006 by Ken

The idea behind OpenDNS is really quite neat and may prove useful for those of us who have residential clients.

So what is OpenDNS? Well simply put, it’s a caching DNS server open to the public with a twist. The first feature OpenDNS provides is, as mentioned, it’s faster response since it doesn’t need to go out and find the IP because it already knows it. But what sets OpenDNS apart from any other caching DNS server is that it also provides simple spell check and, in collaboration with PhishTank.com, protection against known phishing sites.

The spell check isn’t always going to work obviously with so many weird domains out there, it’s hard for it to really know what you were looking for. It does however, catch simple mistakes like typing .cmo instead of .com or a .or instead of .org, etc. If it can’t be sure, it’ll return a quick list of search results from which you can click on or try again.

While this may not be something advanced users may want to take advantage of, it might be nice to set up on computers used by people not quite as tech savvy and may not know a phishing site when it hits them.

Apple Touch Screens?

February 13th, 2006 by Ken

A few interesting tidbits have cropped up this past few days involving Apple. Sources speculate that some time in April, Apple will hold a special event celebrating the iPOD’s birthday with something spectacular. The possible release of a REAL Video iPOD (as opposed the current iPOD with Video)! The unit will occupy the entire front of the current iPOD with a touch-activated scroll wheel which, if on the 5th gen form factor would be really nice. With only a month to go, I can’t wait to see this confirmed.

Another interesting bit of news is that Apple applied for a new patent. Nothing overly fancy alone but….

Basically, the patent apps detail method for recognising data from a multipoint touch sensitive display and interpreting this data to allow things like zooming in on an image etc (a bit like the two finger scrolling on new Powerbooks enables window scrolling).

Before brushing this off, you should check this out on the NYU Media Research Lab website.

First of all, I want one, and second of all, I want one! Imagine the endless possibilities that this application could bring. This brings us so much closer the “future” that we as kids imagined and for some of us, still hope to see. I can’t wait :)

How Fast is Your Browser?

January 20th, 2006 by Ken

There are a number of web browsers out for every operating system under the sun and each one claims they’re far more superior than the next. The main issue being speed. The amount of time it takes for the browser to compose the page. But who REALLY is?

One person set out to find the winner. The results may shock you.

Everyone Should Have a Computer

December 19th, 2005 by Ken

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford one. And those of us who can, don’t always know what to do with the old ones or have no use for them anymore. Well, that’s where the Computer Donation Project comes in.

I heard about this on the news today and since I know there are many of us out there that have extra hardware or computers sitting around, that this would be the ideal way of giving them a 2nd life.

Check out the link above to get an idea of what the project is and if you have anything to donate, you can contact the man in charge at yvrtechdonation@gmail.com.
