MSN Jumps on the Voice Bandwagon

August 31st, 2005 by Ken

Yup, so who didn’t see that coming a million miles away?

Microsoft announced that they too want to provide VoIP services on their MSN Messenger and have gone out and purchased a company called Teleo. A company which was very similar to Skype and has an existing network of land lines to work with.

Once they get this takeover worked out and Teleo’s software properly meshed into Microsoft products, this will put them pretty far ahead of Google’s offering unless they too decide to do the same and pick up a company or two…

Microsoft execs were quoted as to say that this new functionality will start finding its way into MSN Messenger before the end of 2005.

Once again, Microsoft and Google do battle on the web.
Let’s see what Microsoft can do.

New Look

August 31st, 2005 by Ken

Yup. Another new look.
I upgraded to the new version of Movable Type since it has a new anti-spam plugin included which does pretty much what SpamAssassin does for mail.

No, I didn’t *have* to upgrade, but those of you who know me, know that I love to have the latest and greatest. :D

The theme kinda sucks, but I’ll deal with that later when I have a chance to fix a few… style issues. Hopefully that’s all that I’ll need to look into, let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks!

Disc Rot and You

August 30th, 2005 by Ken

With CD and DVD burners a standard on computers, everyone burns their precious data to CDs and DVDs without thinking twice. Trusting your most sacred of possessions to a metallic disc 12cm in diameter. What most people don’t know is that like its predecessor, the floppy disk, CDs too can slowly deteriorate.

Popular Photography has a great article on what we should be looking at when getting DVDs. Although there’s no definitive answer, there are some pretty good tips and a few brands you might want to trust a bit more than others.

Arrests Made in Probe of Worm

August 29th, 2005 by Ken

Wow, that was fast. I guess something in the Zotob virus really tipped them off. Two people have been arrested in connection to both the Mytob and last week’s Zotob worm attacks. Farid Essebar, age 18, aka “Diabl0,” was arrested in Morocco, and 21-year-old Atilla Ekici, aka “Coder,” was arrested in Turkey.

Evidence currently shows that the worms were released for financial gain, and could possibly be a part of a larger credit card fraud ring.

The respective countries each have their own set of laws against computer crimes which will allow local authorities to prosecute and the FBI will provide evidence to help in the prosecution. The actual legal charges against the individuals are not yet known.

While on the topic, eWeek has a great article on the process and actions taken at Microsoft in response to the worm.

Google Talk Easter Egg

August 26th, 2005 by Ken

So here’s a little something I found on InsideGoogle for you all Google Talk users for a Friday morning.

Several people had noticed that Google Talk has a strange Easter egg. By right-clicking the Google Talk system tray icon and clicking “About…”, you can see some light-gray text that reads, “play 23 21 13 16 21 19 . 7 1 13 5″. Phillip figured out that it is a simple numerical code referring to the alphabet, and reads “play wumpus.game”. There is indeed a Wumpus Game, and JesterAce realized that all ou need to do to play it within Google Talk is to invite wumpus.game@gmail.com as a friend.

Cool.

Yes it is! Anyone want to give it a go and send me a screenshot?

Next Gen DVD Standard Out the Window

August 25th, 2005 by Ken

Talks between Sony and Toshiba in hopes to create a common DVD standard to combine Blu-ray and HD DVD technology have fallen apart and both have decided to go their own way and take the battle out into the consumer market.

I guess this means that for the first little while, everyone’s going to be taking a chance when they go out and buy a new DVD player until someone finally makes a player that will support both standards…

It’s going to be harsh, but I have a feeling that Sony’s Blu-ray has the upper hand here with Sony Pictures and Playstation behind it.

Only time will tell.
