CompactFlash Performance Database

January 30th, 2006 by Ken

With digital SLRs becoming more and more popular with professionals and amateurs alike, and large file sizes on the rise, people want to make sure they have the fastest media in their cameras to get their shots stored quickly so they can take more simultaneous shots at a time.

Obviously this is more important for sports photographers or anyone who takes fast action shots but we all have a need for speed anyways don’t we? :)

With all the different brands and models of media out there, it’s hard to know which is the best for your camera. Rob Galbraith set out to find the answer. He has compiled a pretty extensive list of digital SLRs and CompactFlash media and timed the write speeds.

This was pretty good timing for me since I’ll be going out to get another card for my camera and with this list, I know what I want to get now :)

Google Pack

January 16th, 2006 by Ken

Google announced at their CES Keynote a new software package called Google Pack. Essentially, Google Pack is ALL of Google’s software made easy to download along with a few other commonly used, key programs such as Norton Anti-Virus 2005, Ad-Aware Personal Edition, Acrobat Reader and Firefox (with the Google Toolbar of course).

So why install Google Pack? Well, first of all, it makes getting a new computer going as easy as clicking a single button on the Google Pack website. Installation is customizable so if there’s anything you don’t want to install, it’s as easy as checking it off before proceeding.

Secondly, Google has included a little program called Google Updater which keeps the installed software up-to-date. Pretty much like Windows Update from Microsoft. Hopefully this will be made open to other software developers so they they too can stream software updates to users.

Personally, I’d rather install my software on my own, but for anyone who’s not technically inclined, this is a great idea. And even for any geeks, this would make for easy new computer set ups.

Windows Media Components for Apple Quicktime

January 12th, 2006 by Ken

Wow, I’m kinda surprised to see this promoted on Microsoft. With the Windows Media Components for Apple Quicktime, Mac users will be able to watch Windows Media content on their Quicktime player. It supports all formats that you would expect from Windows Media Player except for anything protected by DRM. If you want to do more than just view WMP content, such as import and export, you’ll need to go to the Flip4Mac site and purchase the other components from them.

Intel Macs Hit Store Shelves Early, But With Same Pricing

January 11th, 2006 by Ken

Something that Apple users and future users alike thought with Apple would do by switching to Intel CPUs was that they would lower prices to match the current PC market but with the release of the now named, MacBookPro (as opposed to the PowerBook) in about a month, people are finding that this is not the case.

Too bad, I think Jobs still has dollar signs in his eyes and with the lower cost of the Intel CPUs those dollar signs just got bigger… In some respects, it *is* a little bit cheaper considering the laptops are now sporting dual core processors and you do get a built-in iSight camera now too, so it’s not like you’re not getting anything new… I’m sure that this is just a small bump in the road and that users will still continue to purchase Apples no matter what but I was at least hoping to see him lower the price a little bit.

For anyone who’s interested as well, Steve’s keynote at MacWorld 2006 can be found here.

EDIT: Apple has also posted the AD they’ll be playing on TV announcing the Intel powered Macs here. Pretty funny, check it out.

Intel’s Getting Out of the ‘Inside’ and ‘Leaping Ahead’

January 4th, 2006 by Ken

After 14 years of ‘Intel Inside’, we are getting a new lame slogan from Intel, ‘Leap Ahead’.

Doesn’t do much for me, but at least they won’t be sticking it on new computers or anything like they did before when ‘Intel Inside’ was announced.

The Register has a few pics of the new branding.
