Wireless Mighty Mouse Reduced Power Hack

July 31st, 2006 by Ken

When it comes to wireless stuff, we always try to suck out as much power as possible before havng to change the batteries. Well one user of Apple’s new wireless Mighty Mouse noticed that on his mouse, the LED remained on even while in standby mode. Going into geek mode, he whipped out his multimeter and found out that Mighty Mouse actually used more juice when sitting idle (about .0450 amps) than when in use (around .0285 amps).

So naturally, this called for a hack! He’s posted the procedure and pretty pictures for anyone else who wants to do the same. Good luck! Looks like Apple’s made this little guy hard to crack. You’ll probably want to make sure your Mighty Mouse has the same issue before pulling it apart.

It’s not myTunes, or iTunes. It’s ourTunes

July 21st, 2006 by Ken

The great thing about iTunes is that if someone else on the network is sharing their library, you too can check it out and play stuff off of them while they’re around. Ever want to just drag one of those tunes over to your library? (Don’t worry I won’t tell on you I promise)

ourTunes is the answer to this. ourTunes is a little Java application which scans for shared iTunes libraries and actually lets you download their music. I haven’t tried it out yet, and it appears that it’s still rough around the edges, but the program looks simple enough to use. You’ll need JRE for this of course which can be downloaded off the Sun Microsystems site. I also don’t know what it’ll do with DRM’d stuff but then again, if the music’s DRM’d by Apple, you can always find a program to get around that. :) jHymmmmm, if only I could tell you what it’s called

SyncUpwards and a Side of Hamachi

July 20th, 2006 by Ken

While these two programs don’t exactly go hand in hand. They are both equally cool.

First off, we have SyncUpwards. While it’s still in beta, this little program will allow you to FINALLY synchronize your Google Calendar with Microsoft Outlook! There’s not much to see on the website, but ActiveWin says that it will be “forever free.” The site warns that there are still bugs in the software so make sure to backup your calendar.

Next on the list is something that sounds most like sushi than a program, Hamachi. What the developers describe as “VPN evolved,” this great little program is essentially a VPN for dummies. Hamachi creates a virtual network with your friends which allows you function exactly like a Virtual Private Network! Share files, iTunes, and even play multiplayer games which don’t have Internet support! Comes in 3 flavours; Windows, Mac and Linux!

Making Dreamweaver XHTML Compliant

July 18th, 2006 by Ken

Here’s something I got from A List Apart which teaches you how to make Dreamweaver’s code complete properly format your non-closing tags to be XHTML compliant. XHTML requires you to close non–closing (“empty”) elements including form tags, image tags, horizontal rule tags and break tags.

The instructions are for Dreamweaver 4, but the method is pretty much the same for versions thereafter.

Now run along like a good compliant coder and fix your Dreamweaver :)
