Showing the Hibernate Button on Shutdown in XP

August 10th, 2006 by Ken

While it’s not exactly a huge pain to show the Hibernate button upon shutdown (hold the shift key when the Shutdown dialogue pops up and the Standby button changes to Hibernate), it is kind of nice to just have it there automatically.

I didn’t know about this little hack until I started seeing it on a Toshiba laptop that I was setting up for a client did I decide to do some searching and see how it was done.

All that is required is a hotfix from Microsoft and a quick registry edit! Microsoft’s KB893056 article explains steps you need to take to get this going but does not provide you with the hotfix. You actually need to call Microsoft and they will email it to you. I haven’t done this yet, but I’ll probably give them a call in the morning. The hotfix should be completely free of charge so it’s just a few minutes of your time…

Are Your Bookmarks Still Good?

August 10th, 2006 by Ken

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a ton of bookmarks saved from over the years. Me? I have 1275. Two problems with having so many bookmarks. 1, you forget about what you have and where they are… Good thing Firefox lets me search through them, even though it’s not always helpful… 2, how do you know if they’re still any good?

While I still have no solution to the first problem apart from creating better folders for my bookmarks, AM-Deadlink is the solution to the second. This program will search through all your bookmarks for a given browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla…), and try each one out letting you which ones don’t exist anymore, or if they’re being redirected, etc. On top of that, it will also try to update the favicons for you if you want!

So far I’m about 50% done with my bookmarks with a few dead ones, but I’ll have to see what the final count is when it’s all said and done :)

HOWTO: Delete Single Firefox Auto-Complete Entries

August 10th, 2006 by Ken

Don’t you hate it when you’re using auto-complete and then you get an entry stuck in your list that you don’t want?
For me, I’ve got times where I have “die” or “dimens” and then I go in a delete all the saved form data just to clear them out. But you see, there’s a trick to this! You can actually delete SINGLE auto-complete entries!

Next time, just start typing into the form field until the dropdown appears, then use the cursor keys to move to the entry to be deleted and press the SHIFT key and the DELETE key.

DONE! YEY!
