22% of Windows Installs Non-Genuine

January 23rd, 2007 by Ken

That’s what Microsoft said on Monday when they released their numbers on the Windows Genuine Advantage program.

Since WGA launched in July 2005, over 512 million users have attempted to validate their copy of Windows, Microsoft said. Of those, the non-genuine rate was 22.3 percent. 56,000 reports have been made by customers of counterfeit software, which grants that user a free replacement copy of Windows.

It does appear though, that Microsoft is starting to pick up on the fact that most users want to try before they buy so they have posted online versions of both Office 2007 and Windows Vista!

Macworld 2007 Keynote

So for the past few years, people have been asking Apple to provide a downloadable copy of the Macworld keynote and it appears that someone has finally listened!

While the streaming feed is nice, it’s nearly impossible to watch it for a few days after it’s posted and even then, I’ve had problems with the feed breaking up and such…

Anyone who wants to download the keynote will need iTunes.

UPDATE: Just found out that the download is 1.21GB in size [Widescreen 680x360] and can also be downloaded directly without iTunes via this link to the m4v.

10 Business Days of Dell

January 22nd, 2007 by Ken

Imagine my surprise when I saw a banner AD stating Dell Days were back and I didn’t get an email about it! I checked with Raman and he did not either but after checking the link he noticed that it was 10 Business Days of Dell… A different department all together I guess. I managed to catch this on day 1 so onward to Dell!

The insides of my ASUS W1N laptop

January 19th, 2007 by Ken

My laptop has recently been pretty unhappy… The fan is almost always on full bore even when I’m barely doing anything. Anything over ~20% CPU usage got the fan going. Quite annoying. So I decided I would go on an adventure and see if I could clean up the dust bunnies inside. I took a few pics of the process so you can all see what makes this lappy tick.

For detailed instructions on how to open the W1N, read on. For those who just want to see the pictures, click here to see my Flickr set! Read the rest of this entry »

How Apple kept the iPhone under wraps

January 12th, 2007 by Ken

By now, everyone and their dog has heard about the new Apple iPhone but beyond it’s sleek design, and great new interface is the web of secrecy that Apple’s employees and partners had to weave over the past 30 months while everything was under development. While rumors were thrown about on the net about a new iPOD/phone, very little real and conclusive information was really out there.

CNN has a great article about some of the challenges Apple had to endure during that 30 month period. Really makes you think about how you would have handled under all this pressure and not be able to talk to anyone outside of work about it. Including your immediate family and maybe even outside of departments!
