iPhone successfully unlocked!

August 24th, 2007 by Ken

So today is a pretty big day for all you iPhone fanatics. A New Jersey teen has confirmed today that he was able to unlock the iPhone from AT&T and is using it on T-Mobile. The instructions have been posted on his blog and basically requires you to solder 2 wires and then from there on out, is all about editing the firmware. This is not something for just anyone but I’m sure in a few more days there will be software to do all this apart from the soldering.

Get ready for the flood of unlocked iPhones on eBay!

Shaw joins Telus in blocking port 25

August 22nd, 2007 by Ken

As far as I know, Telus has been blocking port 25 to servers other than it’s own mail servers for about a month now. Possibly longer, but that was the first time I’d heard of it. On the Shaw side, I had been fine and things were peachy until this morning when my outgoing mail started bouncing back.

Shaw had finally joined in

A friend of mine tells me that Shaw had actually been implementing this one area at a time over the past year, so Telus could have been doing the same as well. Port 25 blocking isn’t something that’s just recently popped up though. A number of providers in the US have already been doing this for a while now and we’re only now essentially “catching up” here in Canada.

The reasoning to this port 25 blocking? “To reduce the volume of Unsolicited Bulk Email (SPAM).”

While this sounds great and all, I wonder how well this actually works. I don’t know when the US started doing this, but I’d really like to know if there has been any substantial drop in SPAM since implementing this block. Sure it prevents zombies from spewing out massive amounts of junk mail and I’m sure in the end there’s some drop in bandwidth usage but maybe that’s the real goal here. To save on bandwidth costs.

Taking inventory of your network

August 10th, 2007 by Ken

I find that not many businesses inventory their hardware and usually the reason for not doing so is that it’s a tough task and most that do I see end up as simple spreadsheets which get messy depending on how much information they keep track of.

Spiceworks is a great program which gives you no excuse not to take inventory. It took me about 10 minutes to scan my network and come up with a pretty good inventory of my hardware. I’m sure if I dig deeper into this program, I can get a complete profile of my software and with a bit more configuring, I can have Spiceworks scan my network on a set schedule to monitor any changes and notify me of any servers that go down or when drive space reaches a certain percentage.

The best part about Spiceworks though, is that it’s completely free!

So not only does it make taking inventory easy, it’s extremely easy on the pocketbook. Definitely worth checking out!

Download torrents without a traditional client

August 7th, 2007 by Ken

Most bittorrent users have clients like Azureus, uTorrent, or Transmission to name a few popular ones, but what if you don’t regularly download torrents or maybe you’re using someone else’s computer?

BitLet is an applet which runs via your web browser allowing you to download torrents without having to install an actual client. The applet uploads, resumes, and even seeds when the download is completed.

While it’s all still in beta, BitLet does appear to work quite well for a simple client. Returning to the site shows you torrents you recently downloaded and their completion percentage if you haven’t finished downloading yet. There’s no way to clear the list apart from deleting your cookies I would assume so be careful what you do download.

So it’s been a while…

August 1st, 2007 by Ken

Since I last posted on here. Been busy with all kinds of madness. One of which includes a new server and business. As of late yesterday, our new server went into the co-location and my blog is now running on a proper connection! No more hokey old-computer-turned-server on Shaw cable!

We’re still getting settled in and everything, but it’s all pretty exciting stuff!

Stay tuned for more great things!
